Nominated by Julia Meredith, Middlesbrough College

Among all the possible nominations we could have made from our Access Diploma in Health, Joe Renwick is, in our view, exceptional amongst an exceptional cohort of people. This reflective quiet man has made a remarkable journey and will be an absolute asset to Teesside University when he begins his studies on their Adult Learning Degree in September.

His academic skills have developed from, by his own admission, struggling to even meet the basic criteria to now operating at distinction level across all units. His motivation to succeed and to push himself forwards is clear.Joe is an independent learner in every sense of the word, overcoming all obstacles on his way to undergraduate life. He is dyslexic, but does not see this as an issue; he has devised very effective strategies to cope and does so extremely well. His attendance is exceptional and his commitment to his studies is truly remarkable. He also gives unerring support to his peers.

Everyone who has taught Joe has said that ‘if we were in hospital we would want someone like Joe to care for us’.We all are absolutely certain that he will be a credit to his chosen future profession and his university course.
