Derwentside College celebrates learner achievements

Derwentside College celebrated the achievements of their learners at an event held on Thursday 5th December 2019.

One Awards were pleased to support the event by sponsoring the Excellence in Access to Higher Education Award, which was presented to James Cox (pictured below being presented with his award by John McCarthy CBE, James Cox and Patrick O'doherty Head of Faculty, Full Time Learning Programmes).

James had been a bus driver for 24-years, when a dramatic life-changing event abruptly drew his driving career to a close. Rather than squander the opportunity of a new start, James made the decision to do something that would not only enhance his life, but would also make a positive difference to others. Following the suggestion that he would make a great teacher, James sought Careers Advice and was directed to the Education Pathway on the Access to HE programme. Quickly finding a new enthusiasm for academia, James subsequently went on to achieve outstanding success by gaining distinction grades in all subjects and excelling throughout. So much was James’ success, that the Access to HE staff were unanimous in nominating James for this award! Excelling academically and being a pleasure to teach, James has now progressed to University to study a BA Honours in Primary Education. James, we are in no doubt that your skills will enable you to inspire and teach others, and you will ultimately be in a class of your own!
