Access to HE Awards 2021

Our Access to HE Awards 2021 was held as part of our annual Access to HE Forum on Friday 11th June 2021 and as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations as an Access Validating Agency.

The awards focus on students, and the people and organisations that have enabled innovative and life-changing learning to take place. The winners and highly commended nominations highlight those individuals, Access to HE Providers and Higher Education Institutions that achieve, innovate and strive for excellence in education.

Due to the current restrictions the event was held online, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm for the shortlisted nominees.

Please below details of the winning and highly commended nominations in each category: 

Centre Awards

Outstanding Commitment to Quality Improvement

  • Winner - Education Partnership North East
  • Highly Commended - New College Durham, Access to HE Science Team

Innovation in Access to HE

  • Winner - Middlesbrough College Access to HE Health Distance Learning programme

Sue Scheilling Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Student Experience

  • Winner - The Northern School of Art
  • Highly Commended - Redcar and Cleveland College
  • Highly Commended - Stockton Riverside College

Higher Education Provider Award

Higher Education Award for Engagement in Access to HE

  • Winner - University of Bradford
  • Highly Commended - Teesside University

Tutor Award

Students' Choice Award

  • Winner - Michelle Kelso, Redcar and Cleveland College
  • Highly Commended - Baljit Kaur, Calderdale College 
  • Highly Commended - Susan Pattison, Redcar and Cleveland College

Student Awards

Access to HE student achievement in Higher Education 

  • Winner - Samantha Price - Samantha completed her Access to HE Diploma at Stockton Riverside College in 2018 progressing to Teesside University to study Crime and Investigation BSc and has recently been offered a position from the NHS in forensics. 
  • Highly Commended - Brian Kelly - Brian completed his Access to HE Diploma at Middlesbrough College in 2018 progressing to Teesside University to study Paramedic Science, after graduating this summer he will be joining Yorkshire Ambulance Service as a trainee paramedic.
  • Highly Commended - Lacey Stubbs - Lacey completed her #AccesstoHE Diploma at Redcar and Cleveland College in 2017 progressing to Teesside University to study Midwifery in 2019 where she is due to graduate next year.

Higher Learning Higher Earning Award 

  • Winner - Jordan Robson - Jordan completed his Access to HE Diploma Sunderland College in 2017 progressing to Teesside University to study BSc in Paramedic Practice which he achieved in 2020 and will be starting a masters next year.
  • Highly Commended - Lacey Stubbs - Lacey completed her Access to HE Diploma Redcar and Cleveland College in 2017 then completed Level 4 Cert HE in Social Care before progressing to Teesside University to study Midwifery in 2019.
  • Highly Commended - Jessica O'Brien-Blair - Jessica completed her Access to HE Diploma Stockton Riverside College in 2019 progressing to Teesside University to study Operating Department Practitioner where she is due to graduate next year.

Access to HE student Award for peer support

  • Winner - Cassandra Simpson - Cassandra completed the Health Access to HE Diploma Sunderland College in 2020 and is starting a Psychology and Social Sciences degree with the Open University in September.
  • Highly Commended - Christian Armstrong - Christian is studying the Humanities and Social Sciences Access to HE Diploma  at Redcar and Cleveland College and has just accepted an offer from Teesside University to study History.
  • Highly Commended - Louis Gray - Louis is studying the Health Access to HE Diploma Gateshead College and is going onto study Adult Nursing University of Sunderland.

Outstanding Academic Achievement 2019

  • Winner - Sarah Guy - Sarah completed the Access to HE Educational Studies Diploma at New College Durham in 2019 and is currently in her 2nd year studying Anthropology and Archaeology Durham University.
  • Highly Commended  - Katia Mansi - Katia completed the Access to HE Health Diploma t Sunderland College in 2019 and is now studying Adult Nursing at Teesside University

Outstanding Commitment to Study 2019

  • Winner - Beth Howlett - Beth completed the Access to HE Diploma Health at Newcastle City Learning in 2019 and is currently in her 2nd year in Adult Nursing degree at Northumbria University
  • Highly Commended - Claire Moyes - Claire completed the Access to HE Health Diploma at New College Durham in 2019 and is now studying for a BSc (Hons) Podiatry at New College Durham.

Outstanding Commitment to Study 2020

  • Winner - Charlotte Grover - Charlotte completed the Access to HE Health Diploma at Stockton Riverside College in 2020 and is now studying Adult Nursing at Teesside University.
  • Highly Commended - Douglas Haig - Douglas completed the Access to HE Health Diploma at Derwentside College in 2020 and is now studying Adult Nursing at University of Sunderland 
  • Highly Commended - Christine Slasor - Christine completed the Access to HE Humanities and Social Science Diploma at Bishop Auckland College in 2020 and is now studying Sociology at Durham University.
